I don’t know the first thing about hockey. I barely know any of the rules.

I still really enjoyed that piece and finished it rooting for the guy. I was pleased that he did well.

The best part is that even though his role as player is one that will be a thing of the past soon... the enforcer... He seems like a genuinely good fellow.

Sorry... but I really don’t have any sympathy about his trade.

This guy probably makes in a year what I’ve earned over the past 10 years... or more.

And you don’t go into NHL hockey without foreknowledge that you might get traded.

Also, it wasn’t “the NHL” who traded him... so this is *NOT* what makes the people running the NHL assholes.

The GM of the team he was on is the person who traded him. And that doesn’t make the GM an asshole either. It makes the GM a GM who does what he thinks he has to do to make the team as good as possible.

Yeah, it’s tough that he has to move on short notice. But you know what? With the money he makes, he can easily hire all the help he needs. And I’m sure that his wife doesn’t need to work either.

So while it’s a good story, there is absolutely zero sympathy from me.

And I say that as someone who grew up with hockey in Toronto.

“Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?”

That alone would make the NHL assholes. Using a mans kids to blackmail him a pretty fucked up thing to do.

This whole saga is pretty amazing. I was blown away by the fact that’s a degreed engineer... earned while playing in the AHL, no less! It’s pretty brutal how the NHL apparently treated him so I was so happy to see the fantastic time he had at the All Star game. MVP! MVP!

Oh, and I don’t know what you make in a year (or 10), but here’s his career earnings numbers: https://www.hockeyscap.com/players/john_s…

I think they were referring to the public statement he made that didn’t make him or the team look good.

And they’re trying to make him understand that by embarrassing himself, he’s also embarrassing his family due to the public nature of his job.

Neither you nor John Scott seems to fully understand that.

The NHL (just like any sports league) cares a lot about image.

That doesn’t make them assholes.

There are OTHER things that makes the people that run the NHL assholes, but this isn’t one of them.

I used to be a Leafs fan, but I’m an Anti-Leafs fan now. I cheer for whoever the Leafs are playing against.

I believe that hell will freeze over before the Leafs win another Stanley Cup.

I was hoping that Hamilton would get an NHL franchise...

Well in the end he went to the all star, played on the winning team, scored two goals, and had a fun time. Maybe I’m missing the point where he embarrassed himself and his family. The fans loved it, the other players loved it, the announcers loved it, the only people that didnt were the NHL executives.

NASCAR could have done the same thing when Josh Wise won the fan vote a years ago, but they didnt. They took it with a grain of salt, had some fun with it, and made moves to change the voting process for next year. The NHL were the ones that made this the story it was, not John Scott.

That is the nature of the beast. Trades can happen. At expected times. At unexpected times. But the d00d already planned ahead when he got his degree so....

At least he is a player that didn’t squander any opportunities on the team prior to the trade (unlike some players in the other major sports)

$550,000 for the job of an enforcer is NOTHING to complain about.

And if he starts to score more goals/assists, he will make a million dollar salary before long.

Tell me... if he has it soooo hard, why doesn’t he just walk away and take up that career in engineering that he discussed in the article?

I’ll tell you why... Because he’s living the dream making 5-10X what he’d make working as an engineer in a job with way more fun and way more fame.

His complaints are bullshit.

Look, I understand taking issue with the tone, but the trade itself was bullshit. You don’t take a guy off the line and stuff him in the minors as part of a “team-building” trade. This is classic Bettman NHL shit. The ownership are thick as thieves. While the All-Star Game is a big deal for the League, and I can understand why they got upset about what they probably saw as a joke balloting process. This shit, like most things in the League, came straight from NYC.

Playing in the Game matters to the players (generally), and I don’t think it’s hard to understand why it would mean more to a guy who has played as an enforcer, and thus was unlikely to ever see the ASG.

Oh, and your “why isn’t he an engineer” question is a red herring, and a shit one at that.

“ Maybe I’m missing the point where he embarrassed himself and his family.”

If you work for Dow Chemical and publicly diss Dow Chemical, you’ll have many fans in the public too! Many people love to hate Dow Chemical.

But they aren’t the ones directly paying your salary.

You’ll also be pissing off your current employer, the people who DO pay your salary.

AND any future employers will take a dim view of your actions as well.

In other words, he IS embarrassing himself in front of some key people... the people who pay him... he’s just not being smart enough to realize it.

And hockey ain’t NASCAR...

“Oh, and your “why isn’t he an engineer” question is a red herring, and a shit one at that.”

Nope... it’s quite valid. If he has it soooo hard, why doesn’t he go into the engineering job he went to school for?

That’s not a rhetorical question.

The truth is he doesn’t actually have it that bad...

If I was in his place, I would be counting my blessings that I’m one of the FEW who make it into the NHL... not to mention one of the 1% or less who make a 6 figure income at such a relatively young age.

Just because the man is well paid (although not as well paid as some of his colleagues), and that paycheck causes him to pick a career in sports, rather than an alternative career, doesn’t mean that the actions of the league aren’t bullshit. The “it’s not that bad, there are worse things” defense is a classic. It’s called the fallacy of relative privation.

I encourage you to look it up. Your formulation (“He doesn’t have the right complain, things could be worse.”) is a particularly common formulation thereof.

I disagree, the NHL are assholes not only towards John Scott but towards us fans. They knew full well what would happen by opening voting to the fans, fans would choose who they wanted to play. Yes it started out as a joke, but the fans still chose John Scott to be a captain and the NHL should have honored that. They instead decided to shit on us fans because as normal, Bettman decided to be the biggest shit stain possible and try change the outcome because heaven fucking forbid fans get what they want.

You can not honestly tell me that him being part of a trade had ANYTHING to do with making either the Coyotes or Montreal better. I mean come on, Coyotes have about 12 million in cap space so they don’t have to get rid of anyone. Not to mention Montreal didn’t need to make that trade either because they have almost 5 million in cap space and I seriously doubt that 100k they’re saving on the trade is somehow going to allow them to pull off a blockbuster trade. It was basically a straight up swap between Scott and Tinordi that didn’t really need to happen other than to prevent Scott from playing in the ASG.

The fact that both the Coyotes and Bettman asked him to bow out and the whole trade situation after is enough smoke to be an out of control wild fire.

Finally:

Kinja'd!!!

I hope Bettmans asshole grows tastebuds.

“You can not honestly tell me that him being part of a trade had ANYTHING to do with making either the Coyotes or Montreal better.”

I don’t know the details of the trade, but it could simply be a case where the Coyotes felt they had one enforcer too many or they needed more help in anther area... I can’t say for sure.

I will say that sometimes GMs make bad trades. John Ferguson Jr, who used to be the Leafs GM, was well known for making bad deals/trades.

“The fact that both the Coyotes and Bettman asked him to bow out”

Well I looked at his stats and I can’t say I’m surprised. It also suggests to me that many sports fans like playing stupid jokes and wanted to make a mockery of the All-Star game... something Bettman will never allow. “Hey... wouldn’t it be funny if we voted a 4th line enforcer as the team captain? ROFLOL”

Hell... If I was in Bettman’s place, I wouldn’t allow it either.

Well, to be fair, I’ve never painted my body either. And I couldn’t name many of the players even on my favorite team (Blackhawks) besides Crawford, Kane and Toews (they keep trading people away cause of the cap and I can’t keep up). But I think you might be missing the point of this story. It has nothing to do with money. As a journeyman enforcer, Scott understands his role perfectly. He’s been in the league 10 years and played on six different NHL teams. So he knows what it’s like to be traded, and when it usually occurs. His trade to Montreal and immediate demotion to the AHL are suspect. It’s very possible and, knowing the way NHL commissioner Gary Bettman operates, very likely that they orchestrated it to get him out of the NHL before the game. And to play him against his daughters is downright despicable. The league doesn’t give a damn about what Scott’s daughters think about him, they care about the product. But in the end, the irony was just delicious. Scott didn’t make a fool out of himself. He played well, scored two goals and got the MVP. And Bettman, who is always roundly booed when he shows up at hockey games, had to grit his teeth and hand Scott the keys to the Honda and a big fat check. In the end, Hockey had a good night. The league, not so much. Though they can take comfort in the fact that viewership was probably way up.

I really wanted to see Scott take his new Honda and do donuts on Gary Bettman’s front lawn. The Pacific may have won the game, but Scott won Hockey.

To be fair, the ASG was a joke already. This is the first time in years anyone has given two shits about the ASG. Don’t for a second think that Bettman cares about the image of the NHL, if he did he would not have allowed 3 lock outs to happen under his tenure. One lockout I can understand, shit happens sometimes but 3? That just means he’s a egotistical fucktard who’d cut his nose off to spite his own face.

That trade was made to keep him out of the ASG. Period. Buttman is a piece of shit. Period.

Regarding how you feel about him making more money than you- well, you aren’t a professional athlete. So, there’s really no parallel.

I really do think you missed that this was a good thing in the end. You are in a small minority of hockey fans and players that feel this way. Nobody even cared about his stats. The ASG was pretty great this year. The hockey skills, play and camaraderie were awesome to watch.
